7 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2019

Well, it’s nearing the end of December again and that means for many people, that it’s time to make new year’s resolutions.

Maybe you want to stop smoking or lose weight, you might want to overcome a fear or phobia, improve self confidence or perhaps you have another resolution in mind. Every year, millions of people make a resolution, only to break it a few days, weeks or perhaps months later. The reason for this is simple; we treat it as a wish, hoping that it will magically somehow come true.

A resolution is actually two things; firstly it’s a goal and secondly, it’s a firm commitment to achieving that goal. It’s easy to make a resolution, but often a lot harder to stick with it. Quite often, new year’s resolutions are destined to fail because we actually enjoy doing these things and don’t want to stop doing them. Another common reason for failing to achieve goals is the fear of failure itself.

If you want to accomplish your new year’s resolutions in 2019, the following tips may help:

Make sure your goal is realistic: Do you really want to make this change and can you do it?

Put it on paper: Write your goal down and put it somewhere you will see it every day, such as the fridge door or bathroom mirror. Committing to your goal in writing makes it more real and that means you’re more likely to achieve it.

Be specific: Rather than “I want to lose weight”, how much weight do you want to lose? What clothes size do you want to be? Remember: Vague goals produce vague results.

Make a plan: What are you going to do and how are you going to do it? Breaking your goal down into organised and manageable steps will make it easier for you to achieve it.

Set a deadline: A deadline acts as a strong reminder on a subconscious level. If you have a large goal, then set yourself a series of smaller deadlines along the way. If you don’t achieve your goal by the deadline, ask yourself why and when you have an answer, set a new deadline and resolve not to make the same mistake again.

Start now: Not tomorrow or the next day, but now. Procrastination is one of the major reasons why people don’t achieve their goals. Every day, do something that contributes towards your goal. Once you have started, it’s much easier to continue travelling in the same direction.

Keep moving: Some steps may be smaller than others, but it’s important to keep moving forwards.
